🔀 How Emotional Intelligence Completes the Puzzle for Challenged Hiring Managers
By Dr. James Roesler – Empower With EI
In my work with leaders and organizations, I often see hiring managers struggling—not because they lack technical knowledge or experience, but because they overlook one critical skill: emotional intelligence (EI).
When EI is underdeveloped, hiring managers unintentionally create barriers that drive talent away. They may:
• Fail to connect authentically with candidates, missing the human side of the interview.
• Allow bias or impatience to show, which discourages high-potential applicants.
• Struggle to build trust within their teams, fueling turnover before a new hire even begins.
Here’s the truth: candidates don’t just evaluate the job—they evaluate you. A manager who communicates poorly, lacks empathy, or shows stress in the process often causes top candidates to walk away.
The good news is that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened. Managers who want to improve should focus on:
• Self-awareness: Recognize how your tone, body language, and words affect others.
• Empathy: Go beyond the résumé—listen for the candidate’s story, motivations, and concerns.
• Emotional regulation: Stay calm, consistent, and professional even when the process is stressful.
• Clear, respectful communication: Make every candidate feel valued, regardless of the outcome.
At its core, hiring isn’t just about filling roles—it’s about building relationships. Emotional intelligence is what transforms an interview from a transaction into a connection, and that connection is what attracts and retains the right people.
Reflection: If your hiring process is falling short, ask yourself—do I really have a talent pipeline problem, or is it an emotional intelligence problem?
